Brain Quintenz to Resign from Kalshi Board Upon Taking Office
Brain Quintenz, who has been nominated by Trump to lead the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), has announced his resignation from the board of Kalshi upon assuming his new role. In a letter to John Einstman, the designated agency ethics official for the CFTC, Quintenz expressed his intention to step down from his position with KalshiEx once confirmed.
Moreover, Quintenz has also made the decision to divest all the shares he holds in the prediction market platform, including unvested stock options. In his letter, he stated, “I will forfeit all KalshiEx stock options that are unvested at the time of my resignation. I will divest any vested stock options and stock in KalshiEx as soon as practicable, but not later than 90 days after my confirmation.”
Additionally, Quintenz has declared that he will refrain from involvement in any matters related to Kalshi for a minimum of one year after his resignation. He mentioned, “for a period of one year after my resignation, I will not participate personally and substantially in any particular matter involving specific parties in which I know KalshiEx is a party or represents a party.”
CFTC’s Stance on Sports Betting
Despite mounting pressure from state regulators and sports leagues urging action, the CFTC has remained silent on Kalshi’s foray into sports betting markets. Quintenz will be the sole active commissioner out of the five seats upon assuming office, as the others have either departed or are in the process of leaving.
With new leadership at the helm, the organization appears to be leaning towards supporting the expansion of prediction markets. Previously, under the Biden administration, the CFTC had compelled Kalshi to remove its US president market. However, following a court battle that ended in Kalshi reinstating the market, it garnered significant popularity among bettors.
This development marked the first instance where Americans could legally wager on election outcomes. The CFTC has recently withdrawn its legal challenge, opening the doors for future election betting. Notably, a candidate for California Governor, Kyle Langford, recently placed a bet on himself to secure the office.
Kalshi’s Expansion into Sports Markets
Building on the success of election markets, Kalshi has expanded its offerings to include sports markets this year. While previously limiting markets to futures, users can now predict the outcomes of individual matches in prominent leagues such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL. The platform has also introduced various March Madness markets in NCAA basketball, resulting in over $400 million in trading volume.
Moreover, Kalshi recorded $86 million in trades during the Masters last month. Overall, the platform processed approximately $1.97 billion in trading volume in 2024, marking a substantial increase from $183 million in 2023. With the soaring trade volumes in their sports markets, this figure is expected to climb further this year.
Currently, sports markets account for over 75% of all markets on the platform. This shift has received backlash from tribal sportsbooks and state gambling regulators. Seven states have issued cease-and-desist letters to Kalshi, prompting legal actions from the platform in New Jersey, Nevada, and Maryland, with more likely to follow.
Despite the challenges, judges have sided with Kalshi in New Jersey and Nevada, allowing operations to continue. With Quintenz poised to lead the CFTC, the platform’s operations are likely to face minimal obstacles in the foreseeable future.
