Belarusian President Proposes Consumer Protection Measures in Gambling Industry

President Aleksandr Lukashenko of Belarus has recently called on the Council of Ministers to implement comprehensive reforms aimed at safeguarding consumers involved in the gambling industry. Lukashenko emphasized the importance of enacting measures to ensure better protection for consumers during a recent meeting.

Strict Restrictions on Payments to Foreign Gambling Websites

One of the key proposals put forward by Lukashenko is to prohibit individuals from making payments to foreign gambling websites that operate without a license in Belarus. The President highlighted the predatory nature of these unlicensed platforms and emphasized the need to block payment methods to prevent consumers from engaging in offshore gambling activities.

“Blocking payment methods is crucial in preventing consumers from being lured into placing bets on unlicensed websites,” Lukashenko stated.

Self-Exclusion and Credit Card Blocking

In addition to restricting payments to foreign gambling sites, Lukashenko also emphasized the importance of implementing measures such as self-exclusion for individuals showing signs of gambling addiction. The President proposed blocking credit cards for gambling purposes to prevent compulsive gamblers from accumulating debt that could have serious financial and personal consequences.

“We need to protect children and vulnerable players by introducing broader consumer protection measures tailored to address these critical issues,” Lukashenko stressed.

Preventing Money Transfers for Gambling Purposes

Lukashenko further proposed banning banks from transferring funds related to gambling outside the country, emphasizing the need to invest the money earned from gambling activities within Belarus. The President underscored the importance of preventing the exploitation of vulnerable consumers by unlicensed gambling operators.

“The funds generated from gambling activities should benefit our country and not be channeled to offshore platforms,” Lukashenko emphasized.

Addressing the Issue of Unlicensed Gambling Websites

Lukashenko acknowledged the prevalence of unlicensed gambling websites that target vulnerable consumers in Belarus. He highlighted the risks associated with compulsive gambling, including debt accumulation and property loss, urging immediate action to tackle the issue.

“We must take proactive measures to address the proliferation of unlicensed gambling platforms that pose a threat to consumers,” Lukashenko stated.

Noting that unlicensed gambling operations are not unique to Belarus, Lukashenko cited examples from other European countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands, where a significant percentage of players opt for offshore gambling platforms.

“We must work together to protect consumers and ensure a safe and regulated gambling environment in Belarus,” Lukashenko concluded.
