Bally’s Corporation, a prominent American casino operator, has made a generous gesture by purchasing Preston High School, a Catholic all-girls high school in the Bronx that was on the brink of closure. This act of philanthropy comes as Bally’s continues its efforts to secure one of the three downstate New York casino licenses.

Bally’s Purchase of Preston High School

On April 22, Bally’s Foundation, the charitable arm of the company, finalized a deal to acquire Preston High School in Throggs Neck. This acquisition ensures that the school, which was facing imminent closure, will be able to continue its operations.

Initially, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, the school’s owners, had rejected Bally’s offer, expressing doubts about external assistance. They had announced that the school would cease operations at the end of the academic year due to financial challenges.

However, following pleas from various stakeholders including students, parents, teachers, and officials, the Sisters agreed to the deal. Under the agreement, Bally’s Foundation purchased the property for $8.5 million. The property will then be leased back to the school for a symbolic fee of one dollar per year for 25 years, with the option to renew every five years. Bally’s will also cover up to $1.6 million for repairs and additional expenses.

The school will maintain its independence and have the first right of refusal if Bally’s Foundation decides to sell the property. To ensure this autonomy, a new board will be established by the Sisters.

Relief Among Officials and Alumni

Officials who championed for the school’s survival expressed gratitude to Bally’s for stepping in to preserve the historic institution. Preston High School has been a pillar of the community since 1947 and has played a crucial role in educating generations of young women.

Assembly member Michael Benedetto hailed the deal as a “tremendous victory for the students” and the Throggs Neck community. Borough President Vanessa Gibson commended the agreement as a testament to the community’s collective efforts.

Attorney General Letitia James acknowledged the school’s significance as a community cornerstone and thanked all advocates for their commitment to keeping the school operational.

Bally’s Chair, Soo Kim, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting institutions like Preston High School as part of its long-term partnership with the communities it serves.

Continued Efforts and Future Plans

While Bally’s has successfully secured the future of Preston High School, its pursuit of one of the downstate New York casino licenses remains ongoing. The company aims to be selected as a license holder and intends to develop a casino hotel in the Bronx.

Bally’s has pledged to allocate $625 million to support local projects and initiatives, emphasizing the potential job creation and economic boost that the casino hotel could bring to the Bronx area.

Despite receiving support from many locals, concerns have been raised about potential issues such as increased traffic, crime rates, and the risk of gambling addiction.

In addition to its endeavors in New York, Bally’s Chair, Soo Kim, has also commented on the company’s recent involvement with Australia’s Star Entertainment Group.
