Unibet Faces Issues with Dutch Gambling Regulator
FDJ United‘s popular Unibet brand, known as Optdeck in the Netherlands, has recently encountered troubles with the country’s gambling regulator, the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). The company received two official warnings for violating strict Dutch regulations aimed at minimizing gambling harm.
Untargeted Ads on Buses
The first warning was regarding untargeted advertising, which has been prohibited in the Netherlands since 2023. Unibet had a partnership with the Unibet Tietema Rockets cycling team, with the agreement that the Unibet logo would only appear on the team’s bus. However, the bus was used for other purposes, breaching the advertising rules and agreement.
The KSA responded by instructing the cycling team to immediately stop using the bus and to replace the Unibet logo with different stickers. The KSA emphasized that providers are responsible for ensuring that sponsorship agreements comply with the law, and the bus in its current state will no longer be allowed on the road after July 1, 2025, coinciding with the ban on sports sponsorship.
Optdeck clarified that managing multiple sponsorship agreements can be challenging, and they were unaware of the bus being used for other activities.
The Autoplay Function Error
The second warning stemmed from Unibet’s BonusBuy feature containing an autoplay function, which allows players to continue playing automatically after buying bonuses. This function is strictly prohibited for online gambling products targeting Dutch players.
Optdeck explained that a third party accidentally activated the autoplay function shortly after its launch. It was live for only two hours before being deactivated. The company reimbursed players who lost money during that time and is implementing measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The KSA acknowledged that both violations were promptly rectified upon detection, leading to warnings instead of harsher penalties. However, they cautioned that any future infringements could result in more severe consequences.
Dutch Efforts to Reduce Gambling Harm
These incidents occur in the broader context of the Netherlands’ proactive measures to minimize gambling harm. Since July 2023, untargeted gambling advertisements on various platforms have been banned, allowing only highly targeted ads under stringent regulations.
In addition to advertising restrictions, the KSA has implemented mandatory deposit limits and checks to ensure players can afford their gambling activities. These measures have significantly reduced the number of individuals losing substantial amounts of money monthly.
As the focus remains on player protection in Dutch gambling policy, ongoing efforts are aimed at creating a safer and more responsible gambling environment for all participants.
